About Holdfast

One man, holding fast
for another

Peer-led crisis support for men. Trained volunteers matched with men who are struggling. AI-augmented, human-first. Always free.

The problem we exist to solve

Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Most never ask for help.

Existing services require men to pick up the phone, walk into a clinic, or fill in a form. Most won't. The barrier is too high, and by the time someone notices, it's often too late.

Holdfast changes the entry point. One text. No account. No waiting room. A man who's been through it responds.

How it works

From first message to matched support in minutes, not weeks.

1

First contact

A man in crisis types a message. No registration, no forms. AI triage assesses urgency and risk in real-time.

2

Matched with a Holdfast

Our matching engine connects him with a trained peer volunteer - a "Holdfast" - who has lived experience of similar struggles.

3

Conversation with AI support

The Holdfast and seeker chat via encrypted messaging. An AI co-pilot provides real-time suggestions to the Holdfast only.

4

Hard escalation protocol

If acute risk is detected, a human supervisor is alerted within 15 minutes. No exceptions. AI is the co-pilot, never the pilot.

Who is a Holdfast?

One man talking to another. Not therapy. Not a helpline. Not volunteering in the traditional sense.

A Holdfast is a man who has been through a personal crisis - and come out the other side. He's not a counsellor. He's not a clinician. He's someone who knows what it feels like, and is willing to sit with another man who's going through it now.

No qualifications are needed. What matters is genuine lived experience, emotional stability, and a willingness to be trained and supported.

What we look for

Lived experience

You've been through a rough patch yourself - bereavement, breakdown, addiction, job loss, health crisis, or something else entirely.

Emotional stability

You're in a good place now. Not perfect - nobody is. But grounded enough to hold space for someone else.

Time to give

A few hours a week. Maximum 3 active conversations at once - we cap it to protect you and the men you support.

Willingness to train

About 10 hours of online training. No exams you can't retake. We teach you what you need - you bring what you already have.

You might be right for this if you've come from

Veterans & armed forces Addiction recovery (NA, AA) Bereavement support Emergency services Construction & trades Men's Sheds Sport & fitness communities Faith communities Prison & probation networks Workplace mental health champions NHS social prescribing Or anywhere else life got hard

What you'll actually do

The day-to-day reality of being a Holdfast.

Text-based conversations

You chat via encrypted text messaging - like texting a mate, not running a session. Asynchronous where needed. On your schedule.

AI co-pilot at your side

A discreet sidebar gives you real-time suggestions. It's a conversation guide, never a script. The man you're talking to never sees it.

Never making big calls alone

If something escalates, the platform flags it automatically. A trained supervisor joins within 15 minutes. The hard decisions are shared.

Matched to men like you

Our matching engine pairs you with men whose crisis type, age, and communication style align with your experience.

The training

About 10 hours, delivered flexibly online. No exams you can't retake. Certification on completion.

Training is delivered by a combination of clinical professionals and experienced Holdfasts. Annual 3-hour refresher keeps your certification current.

1

Your Story 3 hours

Structured reflection on your own experience. What happened, what helped, what you wish someone had said.

2

Listening Without Fixing 2 hours

How to be present without trying to solve. What active listening actually means for men.

3

Recognising Risk 2 hours

The language of crisis. Escalation signals. How to ask the direct question about suicide.

4

Platform Skills 1.5 hours

Using the AI co-pilot. The escalation protocol. Your safeguarding obligations.

5

Staying Safe 1.5 hours

Your own mental health as a Holdfast. Recognising when you need to step back.

We look after you

Your wellbeing isn't a policy - it's architecture. Built into every layer of the platform.

Mandatory rest

After high-intensity or escalation conversations, you take a mandatory break. No arguments.

Monthly peer sessions

Virtual group sessions - peer-led, facilitated. A space to process what you're carrying.

Holdfast-to-Holdfast support

A private channel connecting you with other Holdfasts. The peer model, applied to the peer supporters themselves.

No-guilt sabbaticals

Need to step back? Do it. No explanation required. Built into the model from day one.

Burnout monitoring

The platform tracks your conversation load and flags when you need a break - before you realise it yourself.

Structured debrief

After every conversation, a guided reflection helps you process and protects your mental health long-term.

About the organisation

Holdfast is a Community Interest Company (CIC) - a social enterprise structure that locks our mission into law. Our assets and profits are permanently dedicated to the community purpose.

The commercial arm - employer licences, white-label platforms, training - generates the revenue that funds the free crisis support mission. The mission is free, always. The infrastructure costs money.
